MET field trip - William Kentridge Time Exhibition

I really enjoyed this exhibition by William Kentridge. The whole set up of the exhibition was interesting. There were five panels that had video projects screened onto them and a installation piece in the centre. The video played on each of the screen would be the same scene but they were played at different times creating confusion and leaving the viewer wondering what the actual sequence of the clip was. Kentridge replayed certain scenes and actions and these loops were an interesting way of him manipulating time as we know. I think the sound piece went along really well with the entire experience of being in that room because it created a momentum that was in sync with the videos shown. The sounds would gradually increase in volume as they are layered one on top of the other which gave off a sense that time was speeding up and and there were moments when it was suddenly quiet which made it seem as though time had paused for a moment.

As much as I enjoyed this exhibition, it was a little hard for me to follow and know what exactly was going on. I was getting an idea that his videos were dealing with the theme of the apartheid because of the black people used in it as well as the ending scene of them marching as they were chained together. However I didn't really understand the random parts with the man walking over the chair in a loop as well as the part of the scientists messing with the clocks. They were all really cool to watch and I saw their relevance with respect to Kentridge's portrayal of time but I didn't get the link between them and if they were meant to be related.

Final Project Update

I have nearly finished constructing the fragmented pyramid pieces, am left with about two more pieces at the top. As for the illustrations, I have finished sketching the ones on the outside panel and have to proceed with making the coloured ones for the inner panel. A problem that I might encounter is that when I was constructing the pyramid, the base was initially 10 by 10 inches but the fragmented pyramid is slightly bigger because of the space in-between and the folding of the paper. As such I would have to make a bigger illustration and cut them down to fit the actual fragmented pieces. Another problem I might encounter would be the issue of stringing everything together such that the pyramid is able to suspend freely. Initially I wanted to have the pyramid suspend freely when held from the top but in order to make sure that the pyramid is able to piece back together properly when placed on the table I decided to create a board with 4 corners stuck to the base of it for the placement of the pyramid. I am also considering glueing the base of the pyramid pieces to the board and only have the other fragments suspend when lifted.

Final Project Idea: Being Human

I wanted to combine both illustration and a 3D sculpture together for my final piece and make it such that it was interactive with the audience.

The idea for this project is to create a pyramid shaped sculpture that can stand on it's own when left on a surface but can also be picked up and hung from above. When lifted up, the pyramid breaks up into different fragments that alters the viewer's perception of time.

Simplified sketch of how it will look like:

Actual illustration:
Eyes crying
Mess up the order of eyes tearing up on the surface and in the inside it would be various states of mind (E.g happiness, fear, contentment, anger)
Juxtaposition of the linear act of crying with the complexity of emotions one experiences at that time(non-linear/non-sequential).

Inspiration images:

The key concept of the illustration is to show the complexity of emotions that we experience over time. On the surface, a person could be shedding tears but beneath all that the emotion could be much more complicated and complex. We could feel angst, contentment, acceptance and maybe even happiness all at the same time. A person doesn't just feel sad and a person doesn't cry because he or she is sad. A person could be crying out of frustration, crying out of happiness, crying out of anger.
